BUYING A PUG PUPPY

Where and how to begin your search to find a quality Pug Puppy. Go to the nearest Book Store and purchase a book on Pugs.  Read all the Books you can find on the breed.  Then contact one of the below listed Pug Clubs and begin your search at the Pug Dog Clubs Specialty Shows and Match Shows.  Try to attend a Pug Symposium given by the Breed Club. Call the American Kennel Club 919- 233-9767 they will send you information on the breeder's and All Breed Dog Shows in your area.

After the handler or owner finishes showing their dog visit with them ask them about any genetic problems that may show up in the breed. Ask the breeder at what age they sell their puppies.  A reputable breeder would not sell anyone a Pug Puppy under three months of age. At 12 weeks of age they should have their 2nd. Puppy Shot. At 16 weeks you must give the puppy a Finsl Shot. Never buy a Pug puppy from anyone who tries to sell you a puppy under 12 weeks.  If they try check their name off in the dog show catalog and walk away.

As a breeder any genetic problem the puppy may have does not show up until the puppy is over 12 weeks old. You can not begin to housebreak the puppy until it is four months old or any of the Toy Breeds. When we take the Pug puppies to our Veterinarian for their final shots one may have a serious reaction to the vaccine and we can loose the puppy. We do not want this to happen to you.

Beware of the breeder who has four litters of Pugs or other breeds at one time, or tries to talk you into breeders terms or any type of deal.

Have the breeder show you the American Kennel Club registration papers or litter registration papers. Do not purchase or take the puppy home without the American Kennel Club registration papers.

AKC Customer Service ( 919 ) 233 - 9767 or  Web Page: http://www.akc.org.

Make sure the puppy has been wormed and had all its protected inoculations But do not let your Vet give the Rabies Shot to your Puppy until the puppy is 6 months old and only 1/2 shot. DO NOT LEAVE THE VETS OFFICE FOR ONE HOUR..  Also get the name & phone number of their Vet. Have the puppy checked by your vet within 24 hours.

A puppy at 12 weeks of age should  be feed 4 times a day. Ask  the breeder what they are feeding the puppy. I cook fresh food for my Pugs. Be sure to check what you feed your Pugs..

It is advisable to ask the price of the puppies before making your final selection. The average puppy cost between $1500.00 and $2000.00 depending on the quality of their bloodlines. Show promising puppies start at $2500.00 and up. Pug Breeders will only accept cash for their puppies.

ABIES

<>Permission Granted to Forward / Cross Post   Dear Friends,

Many dog caregivers across the country are becoming more and more aware of the possibility that over vaccination can have harmful effects on dogs -and the rabies vaccine is no exception. The incidence of rabies exposure in companion animals and humans, though very low today, still remains a distinct possibility. Consequently, the Federal and state governments require every dog to be vaccinated triennially (still even annually or biannually in a few states) against rabies. However, the veterinary community is increasingly concerned that rabies vaccination given this frequently is not only unnecessary but also responsible for inducing adverse reactions that lead to both acute and chronic immunological and other disorders. Although a French medical study completed in 1992 showed that rabies vaccine is protective for at least five years, Federal and state legislatures have not accepted this finding. Thus, the health and well-being of millions of dogs in the United States remain threatened by the potential for adverse vaccinal events. > Surprisingly, formal, credible research has yet to be performed by either > the manufacturers of rabies vaccines or U.S. academic institutions. The > Federal and state legislatures want to see the results of such research > before any relevant, existing policy or statute regarding rabies vaccination can be modified. Because of the complexities of politics and bureaucratic mindsets, the best way to change the rabies protocol is to prove through a challenge study that dogs not revaccinated for five and seven years after their first two vaccinations remain as protected against rabies as they were at the age of one year.

<>Facilities and staff to commence this important research have been graciously offered by the University of Wisconsin/Madison under the auspicesof Ronald D. Schultz, PhD, Professor and Chair of the Department of Pathobiological Sciences, School of Veterinary Medicine. W. Jean Dodds, DVM, is both the organizer and supervisor of this project . A world-renowned > veterinarian in the fields of hematology, immunology, endocrinology,> nutrition and holistic medicine, Dr.Dodds in 1986 established Hemopet, the > first nonprofit national blood bank program that benefits dogs throughout > North America.

Forty dogs will be involved in the study at the University of > Wisconsin/Madison. Twenty will be used for a five year study and the same > number for a concurrently run seven year study. Because Drs. Dodds and > Schultz believe through monitoring of rabies serologic studies and other > experiences that the two rabies vaccinations a dog receives by one year of > age are fully effective for life, they want to initially prove that > effectiveness over a five-year as well as seven-year span. The successful > completion of this research conducted according to Federally mandated> guidelines should allow USDA licensing and state legislative acceptance of > the tested rabies vaccine for more than three years.>  The University of Wisconsin will provide all of the necessary overhead for > these studies free of charge and Dr. Schultz, the Principal Investigator,> has volunteered his time involved in the formal conduct of the research.> Dr.Dodds and her staff are donating their efforts as well in support of this project. A proforma of the direct expenses needed to complete both studies > entails $177,000 for year one, $150,000 each for years two to five and > $90,000 each for years six and seven. >> Dr. Dodds, Supervisor of this project, has established THE RABIES CHALLENGE > FUND CHARITABLE TRUST to solicit, receive and distribute funds to the > University of Wisconsin Foundation in order to initiate, maintain and > complete Dr.Schultz's research studies. Kris L.Christine, a leading pet > vaccine disclosure activist, is the co-founder and co-trustee of thisTrust. > All gifts made to this charitable trust are deductible for Federal tax > purposes and will be distributed in full to the University of Wisconsin > Foundation.> Donations to The Rabies Challenge Fund Charitable Trust may be sent to The > Rabies Challenge Fund Charitable Trust, c/o Hemopet, 11330 Markon Drive, > Garden Grove, CA 92841. The successful > completion of these two studies will greatly benefit all dogs, which is,> after all, the sole purpose of this undertaking.>> Thank you,> Tunia and Bill Hyland > Friends of The Rabies Challenge Fund .> THE RABIES [Vaccination] CHALLENGE FUND Established! <http://www.itsfortheanimals.com/RABIES-CHALLENGE-FUND.HTM>

Very interesting..>
This came thru on the AKC Parent Club list today. The following is taken from the April/May Newsletter of the Senior  Dogs Project:>>QUOTE: Vaccinations: All Veterinary Schools in North America Changing>Vaccination >> Protocols >>Recent editions of the Senior Dogs Project's newsletter have reported on >the ever-broadening trend of eliminating vaccinations for adult dogs, except for rabies, where required by state law.>> We have now had a report that all 27 veterinary schools in North America are in the process of changing their protocols for vaccinating dogs and  cats. Here, in a nutshell, are the new guidelines under consideration: "Dogs and cats immune systems mature fully at 6 months. If a modified live virus (MLV) vaccine is given after 6 months of age, it produces immunity ,which is good for the life of the pet (i.e., canine distemper, parvo, >feline  distemper). If another MLV vaccine is given a year later, the antibodies from the first vaccine neutralize the antigens of the second vaccine and there is little or no effect. The titer is not 'boosted' nor are more memory cells induced.,< Not only are annual boosters for parvo and distemper unnecessary, they  subject the pet to potential risks of allergic reactions and  immune-mediated hemolytic anemia. There is no scientific documentation to back up label claims for annual administration of MLV vaccines. Puppies  receive antibodies through their mothers milk. This natural protection can last 8-14 weeks. Puppies and kittens should NOT be vaccinated at LESS than 8 weeks. Maternal immunity
will neutralize the vaccine and little protection (0-38%) will be produced.   Vaccination at 6 weeks will, however, delay the timing of the >>first highly effective vaccine. Vaccinations given 2 weeks apart suppress rather than stimulate the immune system. A series of
vaccinations is given starting at 8 weeks and given 3-4 weeks apart up to >>16 weeks of age.
Another vaccination given sometime after 6  months of age (usually at 1 year 4 months) will provide life time immunity." END
